First-ever Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award goes to Randy Murr

Randy Murr Selected As The Inaugural Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award Honoree

Greenville, S.C. (June 15, 2022) – The Barbara Stone Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on creating and supporting visionary programs and initiatives for individuals with disabilities, presented Randy Murr, with the first-ever Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award. The award was created in 2022 to honor a leader who has shown the same commitment, initiative, and spirit as the late Barbara Stone, who made a profound impact on the quality of life for people living with disabilities in Greenville County.

Murr is a Therapeutic Recreation Department Manager for Greenville County Parks, Recreation and Tourism and his life has been interwoven with Barbara Stone since the age of 10. He grew up volunteering by his mother’s side at Camp Spearhead, a camp for individuals with disabilities that Barbara Stone helped start in 1968. Murr has served as Camp Spearhead’s director for 17 years.

“It is with great pride to honor Randy with this award and spotlight his life-long efforts to support individuals with disabilities,” said Lara Ceisel, executive director of the Barbara Stone Foundation. “Barbara Stone was an instrumental leader in the Greenville community when it came to the services and rights of people with disabilities. Her decades-long mission made a profound impact in Greenville County and so is Randy.”

In 2006, Camp Spearhead was sold, and Murr was instrumental in starting a successful capital campaign to build a new home for Camp Spearhead at Pleasant Ridge Camp & Retreat Center. As the 2022 Barbara Stone Community Leadership Award Honoree, Murr was presented with a $500 donation for Camp Spearhead to recognize his work, dedication, and commitment.

“Whether an individual is eight years old or 80 years old, Randy serves them with humility, graciousness, kindness,” said Nancy Callahan, Recreation Division Director Greenville County Parks, Recreation Camp Tourism. “His love for the individual and family is unwavering.”
